Empoli vs Inter Serie A Week 15 - 10/12/06 (14.00 UK)
Empoli - Inter
Stadio Castellani
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Inter’s flying start continues and they travel to the Stadio Castellani looking to take maximum points and maintain their lead at the top. However, they can expect a spirited resistance from an Empoli side who are also enjoying a fairytale campaign and proved a banana skin for the Nerazzurri last term.
Empoli will be determined to bounce back after a controversial 1-0 defeat at Torino last weekend. Gigi Cagni’s men can count themselves very unlucky to have come away empty-handed after a Francesco Marianini header crossed the line but was not given as a goal. While that defeat brought the Azzurri’s seven game unbeaten run to an end, the Tuscan minnows remain in sixth place in spite of gloomy pre-season forecasts.
Inter arrive as favourites but the Empolesi have reasons to be quietly confident. Not only do the hosts have Serie A’s tightest defence – they’ve conceded only 10 this term – but they also beat Inter 1-0 in this fixture last year, albeit thanks to a bizarre Marco Materazzi own goal.
Last weekend’s 2-0 win over Siena extended Inter’s winning streak to seven games, but it was not an entirely comfortable evening for Roberto Mancini’s men who needed Julio Cesar to stop a penalty. While the Beneamata haven’t looked invulnerable, they are unbeaten and their start has mirrored that of the Scudetto winning 1988-89 campaign. Mancini will be delighted with the way things are going, but he certainly won’t let his side relax and has the added personal motivation of impending contract negotiations.
Cagni welcomes back Stefano Lucchini from suspension and he is likely to play the Bergamo stopper alongside ex-Inter man Daniele Adani, Francesco Pratali and Andrea Raggi. Should Nicola Ascoli shrug off a muscular problem he is likely to take a seat on the bench. Richard Vanigli has returned to training but is struggling to return to match fitness.
Inter are without Brazilian defender Maicon and Patrick Vieira after the pair were handed single game bans. Olivier Dacourt’s knee injury is set to keep him out of action for another three or four weeks and Julio Cruz will also not feature until the New Year. Adriano has a back injury and is a doubt but Mancini can still call upon Zlatan Ibrahimovic and in-form Hernan Crespo who scored a wonder goal against Siena. Fabio Grosso has been kept out of training with a muscular problem but should start.
Man on fire: Nicolas Burdisso (Inter) – The Argentine defender didn’t score in three years with the Serpenti, but now he looks prolific after bagging three against Messina in the Coppa Italia and then claiming his first Serie A goal against Siena.
Last season: Empoli 1-0 Inter
Form guide: Empoli (D W D W L) Inter (W W W W W)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Empoli (probable): Balli; Raggi, Adani, Pratali, Lucchini; Almiron, Moro, Busce’, Vannucchi, Marianini; Saudati
Inter (probable): Julio Cesar; Andreolli, Materazzi, Burdisso, Grosso; Stankovic, Cambiasso, J. Zanetti, Figo; Ibrahimovic, Crespo
