Celtic back in SPL command

Celtic went top of the Scottish Premier League for the first time this season after a dramatic 4-2 win over Dundee United at Tannadice.

An own goal from Chris Sutton in the fourth minute gave United an early lead but a great strike from Welshman John Hartson in the 17th minute brought the scores level.

Sutton then made amends for his blunder with a goal in the 28th minute however the Arabs equalised two minutes later through Collin Samuel before Alan Archibald deflected a Bobo Balde header into his own net to restore Celtic's lead.

It took an 88th minute goal from late substitute Stephen Pearson to comfortably secure the points for Gordon Strachan's men, who were thankful of the respective setbacks suffered by Hearts and arch rivals Rangers.

On Saturday Hearts conceded their first defeat of the season going down 2-0 at their arch rivals Hibernian, while champions Rangers drew with Inverness Caledonian Thistle to register their second time one-pointer inside four days.

Celtic now sit top on 32 points, the same as Hearts, thanks to superior goals difference while third-placed Hibs, on 28 points, have a six-point lead on Rangers in fourth.

Celtic came into the game boosted by those but also United's 2-0 defeat to Aberdeen in midweek and their own 5-0 demolishing of Motherwell.

However in this match the visitors were stunned when some slack defensive play left them playing catch up.

A loose pass back from Bobo Balde left Hoops keeper Artur Boruc scrambling, and the ball eventually went out for a corner.

And when Barry Robson's in-swinger came flying in Sutton could only deflect the ball into the net.

In the 17th minute Celtic pulled level in style. Full-back Paul Telfer passed to Sutton at the edge of the box but the former Chelsea player dummied and Hartson was allowed to turn and shoot from 16 yards beat Arabs keeper Derek Stillie.

In the 28th minute Sutton grabbed a goal of his own when he cleverly deflected a 25-yard drive from Maloney, who had cut in from the left, past the helpless Stillie.

Incredibly, two minutes later United pulled level when Canero linked with Samuel just inside the Celtic penalty area. The Trinidadian turned McManus quickly and blasted a shot past Boruc.

Another two minutes later Celtic took the lead when a Maloney corner from the left was helped on by the head of Balde. United defender Archibald deflected the ball into his own net.

Sutton then came close to securing the points early on with a shot from 16 yards which Stillie blocked.

After the interval United squandered two decent chances to equalise within the first minute, with defender Gary Kenneth missing missing the target with a back post header from a Mark Wilson free-kick, and Samuel's spectacular volley from 10 yards going just wide of Boruc's upright.

However after a realtively quiet spell Celtic came close to going further ahead in the 63rd minute when Hartson met a Nakamura in-swinging free-kick with his head only to see Stillie produce a close range save.

Hartson was then replaced by Beattie, and when Nakamura sent him clear the young substitute should have done better than blasting the ball high over the bar as United skipper Paul Ritchie bore down.

Beattie was then injured and replaced by Pearson, and it proved a positive change.

Pearson needed only the slightest of touches to put the ball past Stillie at the back post in the 88th minute after Maloney touched the ball on at the front post following Stilian Petrov's low cross from the right.

Celtic move top of Scottish Premier League

Celtic moved top of the Scottish Premier League on Sunday with a comfortable 3-0 over Falkirk.

Shaun Maloney and Aiden McGeady scored two first-half goals in as many minutes to set Celtic up for the victory. Wales striker John Hartson grabbed the third in the 68th minute with his 100th goal for the club.

Celtic top the standings on goal difference with 35 points from 14 games, the same as Hearts who won 3-0 at home to Dundee United on Saturday.

Champions Rangers are fourth after a scoreless draw at Aberdeen with 23 points from 14 matches. Hibernian are third with 31 from 14.
