Fred debut double keeps Lyon in control

Two goals on his debut from Brazilian striker Fred helped leaders Olympique Lyon stay in control of Ligue 1 with a 2-1 home win over Monaco on Saturday.

The 21-year-old newcomer, playing his first match since joining from Brazilian side Cruzeiro last month, opened the scoring for the champions from close range on six minutes.

He doubled Lyon's advantage with a superb header five minutes into the second half.

Monaco were fighting bravely when they had midfielder Olivier Kapo sent off for a second booking six minutes later.

The team from the principality nevertheless managed to reduce the arrears with a deflected free kick from striker David Gigliotti in the 79th minute.

The win provided Lyon with a welcome morale boost three days before they entertain Real Madrid in their Champions League opener on Tuesday.

Before later action, Lyon, chasing an unprecedented fifth successive title, moved six points clear of a group of three teams -- Racing Lens, Paris St Germain and Girondins Bordeaux.

PSG were playing later on Saturday, at home against Racing Strasbourg. Lens entertain Bordeaux on Sunday.

Lyon shock Real 3-0 in stylish opener

Olympique Lyon opened their Champions League campaign in style with a 3-0 home victory over a weakened Real Madrid in a lively Group F match on Tuesday.

Three first-half goals in quick succession helped Lyon sink the nine-times European champions and strongly suggest they could make an impact in Europe after leaving the showcase club competition in the quarter-finals the last two seasons.

Lyon's task was made easier by the fact that Real, making yet another sluggish start to the season, were missing France playmaker Zinedine Zidane and Brazil striker Ronaldo through injury and suspension respectively.

Norway striker John Carew opened the scoring for the four-times French champions against the run of play on 21 minutes when he surprised Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas by deflecting a Juninho free kick with a header.

Brazilian midfielder Juninho needed no help to double the advantage from another free kick from nearly 30 metres out five minutes later.

France forward Sylvain Wiltord effectively killed the tie on 31 minutes when he made it 3-0 with a magnificent volley from a fine backward pass by defender Anthony Reveillere.

Real, who looked the most active side until Lyon opened the scoring, paid a heavy price for nervous defending but escaped further punishment when Casillas brilliantly saved a Juninho penalty on 42 minutes.

LATEST PRODIGY

The visitors threatened on eight minutes when a trademark powerful free kick from Roberto Carlos flirted with the post.

The set piece followed a foul on Real's latest prodigy, Brazil's Robinho, who gave the Lyon defence plenty of trouble at first before fading along with rest of his team.

Roberto Carlos had another chance on 19 minutes with an angled shot that Lyon goalkeeper Gregory Coupet managed to block.

The expensive Spanish outfit kept showing initiative after the break but looked clumsy in front of goal when they were not denied by a faultless Coupet.

Lyon created few opportunities in the second half but defended with authority and comfortably held on to their lead.

Real began their campaign determined to make up for some dispiriting defeats since their last triumph in 2002.

Last season, they failed to make the last eight for the first time in a decade.

The heavyweight Spanish side, who lost 3-2 at the Bernabeu to promoted Celta Vigo on Saturday, need significant improvement, especially at the back, if they want to avoid suffering the same fate this season.

Lyon, chasing an unprecedented fifth successive French title, had boosted their morale by beating Monaco 2-1 on Saturday, their fifth Ligue 1 victory in six games.

In their European run, the ever-improving French side can take inspiration from the fact that this season's Champions League final will be played at the Stade de France.

.. good start by Lyon.... keep it up! Very Happy

Lyon held on return to domestic fray

Lyon, buzzing after their 3-0 Champions League win against Real Madrid in midweek, were brought back to earth on their return to the French league when being held to a 1-1 draw by Bordeaux.

Bordeaux took a sixth minute lead when their Czech Republic striker Vladimir Smicer's six-metre shot from the left foiled Lyon's international keeper Gregory Coupet.

Lyon manager Gerard Houllier made two quick changes after the hour mark and one of the substitutes, Sylvain Wiltord, made an immediate impact, scoring the equaliser two minutes after coming onto the pitch.

The result left Lyon unbeaten from their first seven matches and top of the table on 17 points, three points clear of surprise packages Le Mans.

Houllier reflected: "We took a gamble bringing on three attacking players but it worked."

"Bordeaux were probably fresher than us, they looked good especially in the first half. In the second half it was our character which helped us to score," said the former Liverpool manager.

Coupet added: "After Tuesday's match against Real Madrid it was hard to reproduce the same level of effort against Bordeaux.

"We haven't started the season that well, but we're picking up points."

Bordeaux manager Ricardo was unsatisfied with the draw.

"I reckon we deserved to win, even if we know that we were facing a really good side."

First division newcomers Le Mans are enjoying punching above their weight, Saturday's 2-1 win over Sochaux their third straight success lifting them three places into second ahead of Sunday's action.

Yohan Hautcoeur put Le Mans in front on 28 minutes with Araujo Ilan grabbing a second half equaliser. Then Le Mans' Tulio De Melo produced an athletic six metre overhead bicycle shot in the 69th minute to seal the three points.

PSG have a chance to regain second when they visit Saint Etienne on Sunday.

Lille picked themselves up from their Champions League loss to Benfica with a 4-0 drubbing of Nice to leave them in fourth place, while elsewhere Nantes beat Toulouse 2-0 and Nancy and Metz drew 1-1.

FC Metz 0-4 Olympique Lyonnais

Lyon earned a comprehensive win at FC Metz to maintain their unbeaten start to the season and open up a seven-point lead atop Ligue 1. Florent Malouda was the inspiration, teeing up first-half goals for John Carew and Sylvain Wiltord either side of Juninho Pernambucano's 36th-minute strike. Malouda then sealed an impressive victory five minutes after the restart with his first goal of the season.

It was a clinical display by a Lyon side without regular wing-backs Eric Abidal and Anthony Réveillère, both of whom were rested by coach Gérard Houllier. The former Liverpool FC manager also started with Sidney Govou, whose late goal earned the French side victory against Olympiacos CFP on Wednesday, on the bench.

Houllier said: "I'm satisfied because we avoided complacency following the Olympiacos win. We remained focussed and the players that came into the side played well.

Nantes 1-1 Lyon. Below, you wil find that we have lost our chances of getting the French Cup. Nantes win via the penalty shootout, with Mickael Landreau performing some world class saves.

Lyon cruise into last 16

High-flying French champions Lyon sealed their spot in the last 16 of the European Champions League with a 4-1 over group F rivals Olympiakos.

After beating the Greeks 2-1 at home two weeks ago, Lyon maintained their unbeaten run in both European and French league action to keep them top of group F with a maximum 12 points after four matches.

"We've qualified and I'm very proud of what my players have achieved," said Lyon coach Gerard Houllier.

"This game is a reference marker for Lyon because we had to face a very enterprising and attacking Olympiakos side at the start.

"We knew to keep our calm, settle the game and develop the football we know how to play," said Houllier. "I wasn't worried because I knew we'd have more opportunities."

Olympiakos coach Trond Sollied congratulated the French side.

"I understand the disappointment of our fans. Lyon played very well," he said. "The two goals we conceded just before half-time really hit our morale badly."

Olympiakos' fourth consecutive loss sends them crashing out of the competition despite having led for most of the first half after Nigerian striker Haruna Babangida opened their account after just three minutes.

But two goals in three minutes just before the break from Juninho and Norwegian striker John Carew set the tone for Gerard Houllier's side, with Malian midfielder Mahamadou Diarra and a second from Carew sealing the tie.

The Greek outfit had been bidding to become just the third side in Champions League history to reach the knockout stages after losing their first three games.

And Babangida, standing in for the injured Michalis Konstantinou, gave early hope when he latched on to Pantelis Kafes's through ball, breaking down the right to beat Gregory Coupet in the Lyon goal.

The hosts' three-man midfield worked hard to deprive Lyon of early possession with Brazil star Rivaldo having a chance to double Olympiakos' account after 30 minutes.

But with Serbian Predrag Djordjevic and Babangida calling for the ball on either side of him, the Brazilian paid the price of hesitation and was run down by two Lyon defenders.

A Rivaldo foul on Carew allowed the French to draw level with a Juninho free kick finding the target after 40 minutes.

And it was the Norwegian striker who put Lyon ahead three minutes later after picking up a loose ball at the edge of the Olympiakos penalty box and powering in a left footed shot cross goal.

Sidney Govou missed a chance for a third just before the half-time whistle when he broke through the Greek defence, but his attempt from distance was easily blocked by Olympiakos goalie Kleopas Giannou.

Back after the break Govou again failed to find the net when he shot over the bar four minutes into the second half.

But Diarra was on target after 55 minutes after a pass to Carew was saved by Giannou, only for the beleaguered goalie's attempt to clear landing straight in the path of the Malian midfielder who nudged into an empty net.

Two minutes later Carew scored his second after firing in off a Juninho freekick which hit off Ioannis Okkas's head and past Giannou.

Despite the goal spree Olympiakos continue to push forward with Coupet keeping out a long range effort from Yaya Toure after 70 minutes, and a Babangida effort nine minutes later.

Govou had a chance to make it 5-1 after 80 minutes, but was again foiled by Giannou who proved up to the task with a superb save.

A last gasp effort from Babangida failed to reduce the deficit for the Greeks as the four-time French champions marched into the next round.
