Chelsea buys Wright-Phillips from Manchester City

July 17, 2005
LONDON (AP) -- Chelsea acquired the rights to Manchester City midfielder Shaun Wright-Phillips on Sunday, paying his old club a reported $36.8 million transfer fee.

Wright-Phillips still must agree on a contract with the defending Premier League champions.

``As a result of Shaun's request to speak to Chelsea we have conducted a series of complex negotiations with Chelsea,'' Manchester City spokesman Paul Tyrrell said. ``The fee for Shaun's transfer has been agreed and consequently we have granted his wish to talk to the other club.''

Wright-Phillips is the stepson of former Arsenal striker Ian Wright. He joined Manchester City in 1999 after being released as a trainee from Nottingham Forest.

He has made four appearances for England's national team

Chelse deny Sheva link:
Quote:
Chelsea have issued a statement denying any interest in Milan striker Andrei Shevchenko.

Jose Mourinho's side have been constantly linked with a move for the Ukraine international all summer, but The Blues insist they are happy with the strikers they have.

Hernan Crespo and Carlton Cole will be given a chance this year by Mourinho, although reports on Wednesday had linked Didier Drogba or Crespo as part of a cash-plus-player deal for Shevchenko.

Stamford Bridge officials have reacted swiftly and taken the unusual step of releasing a statement insisting that they are not trying to sign Shevchenko, and are happy with the strikeforce they have.

Chelsea say that the only player they are interested in signing is midfielder Michael Essien, who should arrive from Lyon soon.

"It is club policy not to comment on speculation linking Chelsea to players," read the club statement.

"However there are continuing, and totally incorrect, reports regarding Andrei Shevchenko that only serve to unnecessarily destabilise those players already at Chelsea.

"The club has made it quite clear that we are seeking to bring in one more player, and we have also made it clear that this will be a midfield player, if it happens.

"We are not seeking to sign a forward and we have total confidence in those we have."

Chelsea's pursuit of Essien continues despite Lyon being reluctant sellers, but the African clearly wants to move to West London.

It will be hard to keep the player against his will and the French champions will soon have to accept the inevitable as Roman Abramovich's spending power again proves decisive.

Adu reveals Chelsea ambition
American teen star Freddy Adu is dreaming of a future move to Barclays Premiership champions Chelsea.

The DC United player, who turned 16 last month, faced the Blues in the second half of a friendly in the US capital on Thursday night.

Adu is widely tipped to become the finest player ever to emerge from the States and revealed his ambition to one day link up with the west Londoners.

"I'm not going to lie about it, they're my favourite club team in the world and maybe one day I can end up there," he told Sky Sports News.

"Playing in the Premiership is a goal for me and I think I can do it. I just need to keep working hard and keep my head on straight."

Asked if he had met Blues boss Jose Mourinho, he added: "I spoke to him before the game. I was just talking to him, I was just having fun and he was congratulating me on the goal I scored last week."

DC United took the lead in the 31st minute as Didier Drogba failed to track the run of Bobby Boswell, who headed in Christian Gomez's corner.

Chelsea hit back four minutes later with a sublime goal from Damien Duff. Shaun Wright-Phillips crossed to the far post where the Republic of Ireland winger volleyed the ball across the goalkeeper and into the corner of the net.

The recovery was completed by Hernan Crespo, who despite appearing to be offside finished well from Arjen Robben's pass.

Summing up the match, Mourinho said: "It is the middle of their season so they are sharp, they are fast, they are better than we are. But our motivation only came when we conceded a goal
