10-man Bayern start title defence with 3-0 win

Quote:
MUNICH, Germany, Aug 5 (Reuters) - Down to 10 men for the entire second half, champions Bayern Munich began their German title defence with a 3-0 victory over Borussia Moenchengladbach on Friday.

Dutchman Roy Makaay settled the tie with two goals in the 86th and 89th minutes of a match which Bayern had dominated in their new stadium.

A turbulent first half had produced a well-taken Owen Hargreaves goal from a Roque Santa Cruz lay-back in the 28th minute and a second yellow card for new signing Valerien Ismael two minutes from halftime.

Ismael, a new arrival from Werder Bremen, was deservedly booked for his first challenge, but the French central defender was unlucky to get his marching orders later after a light pull on Moenchengladbach striker Oliver Neuville's shirt.

Outnumbered Bayern pressed in the second half and Hargreaves found Santa Cruz free, but the Paraguayan struck the post.

The two were among Bayern's best performers on the night against a Moenchengladbach side that had two clear chances to equalise -- a goal-mouth scramble in the 59th minute and a run-through on the left and shot against the post from the impressive Marcell Jansen 20 minutes later.

"Until 2-0 the game was open. We needed to defend well. The 10 did very well. If we'd been 11 I think the fans would have had less cause to worry," said Bayern coach Felix Magath.

"SHOUTING ORDERS"

Horst Koeppel, Moenchengladbach's coach, said he felt his side could have come away with a draw.

"It was on a knife-edge. We had the chance to equalise... the 3-0 rather flattered them."

Makaay made the difference with clinical finishing, but he was put clear by fine midfield work -- a perfect lobbed pass from Jens Jeremies for his first and a tackle and through-ball from Martin Demichelis for his second.

"I have to thank those behind me," said Makaay.

Some 66,000 packed into Munich's spectacular new stadium, its giant tyre shape glowing red on the outside. The home fans, far closer to the pitch than in the old Olympic stadium with its running track, roared Bayern on throughout the first Bundesliga match.

"It was something different. It is a different atmosphere. It brings more motivation and is good for the team," said goalkeeper and captain Oliver Kahn. "There's no sense shouting orders from the back as the players can't hear."

The Bundesliga's other sides feature in matches on Saturday and Sunday.

Reds too strong for Legia Warsaw

Quote:
09.08.2005 Bayern turned in a resolute and committed display on their travels to Poland for Monday evening's friendly against Legia Warsaw, running out 3-1 winners over the Polish top-flight outfit thanks to phases of slick attacking football.

The German visitors' goals came from a Paolo Guerrero brace (20, 39) and a Jacek Magiera own goal on 69 minutes, Piotr Wlodarczyk offering the home side a brief glimpse of hope with a reply in first-half stoppage time. The game was part of the "Visiting Friends" programme presented by Bayern Partners HypoVereinsbank, Audi and T-Com.

Felix Magath seized the opportunity to run the rule over a number of players who had not featured in the Bundesliga opener three days previously. No fewer than six senior professionals made first starting appearances of term against the side which finished third in the Polish top flight last term. With both Oliver Kahn and Michael Rensing sidelined, Bernd Dreher took over in goal with Andreas Ottl turning out at centre-half. Bastian Schweinsteiger and Zé Roberto filled the wide positions with Claudio Pizarro partnering Guerrero up front.

Peru hitman's match-winning double

Bayern gradually found their rhythm at the Wojska Polskiego stadium and eased in front on 20 minutes, Guerrero conjuring up a skilful header from the tightest of angles to direct Schweinsteiger's cross over keeper Lukasz Fabianski and into the far corner.

The visitors now bossed proceedings at will but failed to accept a string of presentable chances, before Guerrero collected Bixente Lizarazu's diagonal ball, evaded a defender's desperate lunge and coolly beat the Polish keeper from close range to double the margin on 39 minutes.

Magiera on target at wrong end

The home side always looked dangerous on the break and Wlodarczyk was a constant threat. Dreher did well to beat out the striker's 37th minute effort, before the centre-forward finally found the target with a free header at the back stick after a Legia dead-ball situation.

The side from the Polish capital emerged for the second half with fire in their bellies, Dreher again denying Wlodarczyk five minutes after the restart. But the powerful visitors began to carve out a string of openings, although Ismaël (52), Pizarro (60) and substitute Roy Makaay (64) failed to convert. At the end of the day, it was unlucky Legia midfielder Magiera who sealed the victory for the German champions, diverting a 69th minute free-kick past his own keeper with the back of his head.

Bayern never looked in danger over the last 20 minutes, although the double winners took their collective foot off the gas and ultimately ran down time for a routine 3-1 victory.

Rampant Reds crush sorry Bayer

Quote:
The champions' formidable motor purred on all cylinders in an entertaining victory over Bayer Leverkusen featuring another Roy Makaay hat-trick.

A capacity 22,500 crowd at the BayArena saw Bayern firmly in the driving seat after just ten minutes courtesy of early strikes from Bayer old boy Michael Ballack and in-form Makaay.

Dimitar Berbatov pulled one back from the spot on the half-hour, but the excellent Ali Karimi's debut goal for the Reds restored the two-goal cushion before the interval.

UEFA Cup hopefuls Leverkusen fought for a way back but Bayern were in irresistible form and Makaay struck a quickfire double on the hour mark to notch yet another hat-trick and take his total for the season to five after just two matches.

Sub Marko Babic slid home a late consolation, but the score by no means flattered the champions as Bayern exacted ample revenge for last season's embarrassing 4-1 defeat on the same ground.

Felix Magath had the customary selection surprise up his sleeve, failing to recall Sebastian Deisler as many had expected and starting with both Owen Hargreaves and Karimi, the Iran newcomer adopting a position on the left side.

Martin Demichelis stepped back to deputise for suspended Valerien Ismael at centre-half, with Roque Santa Cruz retaining his place alongside Makaay up front.

Ballack revelled in many fine moments on this ground in a free-scoring spell with Bayer until 2002, and the Germany captain wasted no time adding to his total, testing home keeper Hans-Jörg Butt with just a minute played before drilling a left-foot shot past the former international's despairing dive three minutes later.

The double winners' superb start turned perfect after 10 minutes when Karimi capitalised on Bernd Schneider's fluffed effort at a clever free-kick to release Makaay in acres of space. The Dutch ace duped Roque Junior before coolly sliding the ball beyond Butt to double the advantage.

Bayern were content to contain the nervous home side for a period as the back four effectively shackled the threat posed by prolific East European strike duo Berbatov and Andrey Voronin. Karimi showed some deft touches in midfield, and Ballack almost squeezed a back header in at the near post midway through the half.

But the Reds inexplicably loosened their grip now and Bayer sensed new hope. Carsten Ramelow rattled the crossbar on 27 minutes and Voronin spooned over with just Oliver Kahn to beat two minutes later, before Berbatov reduced the arrears from the penalty spot on 32 minutes after referee Markus Merk blew for Bixente Lizarazu's push on Voronin.

The setback served only to re-spark the Reds' ignition, and Karimi capped a cracking first-half display with his first goal for the club on 35 minutes, a simple enough tap-in after Demichelis had expertly headed Makaay's floated free-kick back across goal.

Hasan Salihamidzic failed to reappear for the second half, Magath choosing to blood Andreas Ottl, the latest product of the club youth set-up to break into the senior ranks. The youngster slotted in at right-back with Willy Sagnol moving into midfield.

The home side were not dead and buried yet, and Kahn reacted smartly to deny Berbatov on 51 minutes, but Bayern were simply in the mood on this afternoon and Makaay ended the game as a contest after 55 minutes with a comfortable header past Butt from Sagnol's cross.

The travelling support chanted Karimi's name in recognition of an inspirational display as the Iran star gave way to Zé Roberto three minutes later, and the Brazilian was immediately involved with the cross from which Makaay completed his hat-trick after an hour, helped by Bayer newcomer Athirson's schoolboy howler at the back stick.

The action eased now as Leverkusen accepted their fate, a Berbatov rasper aside, and Bayern reduced their activity to the minimum, although there was time for Deisler to make a late appearance in place of the again luckless Santa Cruz.

A momentary lapse allowed sub Babic to add respectability to the scoreline at the death, but there was no denying the visitors' commanding superiority in an ultimately convincing victory.

Salihamidzic Pleased With Liverpool Link

Quote:

Bayern Munich midfielder Hasan Salihamidzic says he is happy at the rumours linking him with a move to European champions Liverpool.
The Bosnian reportedly wants to leave the Bavarian giants, and a switch to Anfield before the end of the month may now be on the cards.

"It’s a great honour to be linked with them," he said. "It will be up to the clubs to decide."

Reds boss Rafa Benitez is still in the market for a wide player after missing out on Luis Figo.

Brazzo is a good player, a real hard-worker. You can't find many players like him at the moment. And by the way, I see you're talking to yourself, I will try to keep this thread at least in two.
