Continental giants lie in wait
| Quote: | The European football spotlight falls fairly and squarely on Monaco this Thursday as a veritable who's who of the continental game gathers at the Grimaldi Forum in Monte Carlo for the Champions League group stage draw, scheduled to start at 4 pm. Bayern will be represented in person by finance chief Karl Hopfner.
Bayern are again seeded this year, alongside Real Madrid, Inter Milan (provided the Italians survive a final qualifying fixture on Wednesday evening), AC Milan, Barcelona, Manchester United, Arsenal and Liverpool. Felix Magath's men are thus guaranteed to avoid the biggest of the big names, "and that's certainly an advantage. You don't have to face one or two of the toughest teams, at least at the start," general manager Uli Hoeneß observed.
Dangerous floaters: Chelsea and Juventus
However, Bayern could yet be in for an early reunion with Chelsea. The London-based outfit eliminated the German champions at the quarter-final stage last term, but lie a lowly 13th in the Uefa rankings and thus start in the second pool of clubs for the draw. The Blues are in good company, along with powerful national champions including Olympique Lyon, PSV Eindhoven and Juventus, former Bayern stopper Robert Kovac's current club. The Reds met the Turin giants at the group stage last term but lost both matches by the only goal.
Pools three and four are hardly without tricky opponents, potentially including Villareal and Betis Sevilla from Spain, Italian dark horses Udinese, OSC Lille of France and Turkish champions Fenerbahce, coached by former Leverkusen boss Christoph Daum.

... i'm praying for a good draw tomorrow, hope no Juve OR Chelsea.... maybe a lame eastern euro club or FC Thun... ?: |

| Quote: | Bayern maintain 100 percent record, win 3-0
Bayern maintained their 100 percent record in 2005-6 with a 3-0 victory over Hertha Berlin on Saturday afternoon, although the below-par champions were pushed hard until the end by a side many experts rate as realistic title contenders this term.
The match sold out weeks ago, but the fare on offer to the 66,000 at the Allianz Arena failed to match the occasion in the opening 45 minutes as lacklustre Munich struggled to break down the visitors' packed rearguard.
Michael Ballack broke the deadlock with a deflected free-kick just two minutes after the restart and the champions immediately looked more comfortable, without ever coming close to their sparkling early-August form.
Mehmet Scholl made a first appearance of term as a late substitute and immediately sent the crowd into raptures with a rare headed goal, before Roy Makaay strolled through Hertha's dispirited defence to round off the scoring.
With none of their rivals able to preserve perfect starts to the campaign, the 500th home win in Bayern's history and their 12th successive Bundesliga triumph sees the Reds back on familiar ground, two points clear at the top of the standings.
Felix Magath made three enforced changes to the side which triumphed in Leverkusen two weeks ago. Injuries to Martin Demichelis, Hasan Salihamidzic and Roque Santa Cruz opened the way for Claudio Pizarro and Zé Roberto to make first starts of term, with Valerien Ismael returning after suspension.
The Brazilian slotted in wide on the left of a midfield featuring Owen Hargreaves in the holding role and Ali Karimi floating behind the front two, the Peru skipper edging out fellow countryman Paolo Guerrero for the berth alongside Roy Makaay.
Former Reds youth Gerhard Tremmel was by far the busier of the two keepers in a distinctly average first period. The Berlin shot-stopper denied Makaay early on, before pushing a cross-cum-shot from the lively Willy Sagnol onto the bar midway through the half.
Oliver Kahn had little difficulty dealing with Brazilian danger man Marcelinho's early driven effort and mopped up a loose ball after a corner with consummate ease, but was otherwise increasingly a spectator.
By contrast, Tremmel moved sharply to gather a header from Karimi and Makaay's drive before the break, although on the whole deep-lying Hertha succeeded in smothering the champions' attacking moves 30 yards from goal.
Whatever Magath said at half-time paid instant dividends as the Reds claimed the opener just two minutes after the restart. Ballack fell in a challenge for which Simunic was booked, the Germany skipper picking himself up to drive the resulting free-kick off international team-mate Arne Friedrich and past the wrong-footed Tremmel.
Bixente Lizarazu limped off to be replaced by Jens Jeremies, and Sebastian Deisler took over from Karimi after another impressively assured display from the Iran newcomer.
The home side were not firing on all cylinders by any means but still comfortably maintained the upper hand as Hertha tried but failed to switch from a defensive to an attacking mentality.
Kahn was more than equal to sub Christopher Samba's 73rd minute drive and Lucio headed narrowly over from a corner two minutes later, but on the whole the Reds were content to match Berlin's lack of inspiration with the necessary minimum.
The second-biggest cheer of the afternoon greeted Mehmet Scholl's introduction for Zé Roberto on 81 minutes – and the biggest shout was reserved for the veteran's rare headed goal from Ballack's excellent cross four minutes later.
Makaay waltzed through the rearguard leaving three defenders sprawling in his wake to notch a glorious third on 87 minutes as the visitors threw in the towel after 80 minutes of stubborn but ultimately futile resistance.

| Quote: | FCB 2-1 FCN Marks 13 straight wins for the Reds!!
Bayern equalled their own record of 13 straight Bundesliga victories and cemented their position at the head of the standings with an ultimately deserved 2-1 victory over energetic Bavarian rivals Nuremberg on Saturday.
The capacity 47,000 crowd at the Franken stadium were offered good value for their gate money in an absorbing first period as the 172nd meeting between the sides set off at a cracking pace.
After a flurry of chances at both ends, the teams traded goals midway through the half. Javier Pinola's 20th minute free-kick evaded a sea of bodies and squirmed past an unsighted Oliver Kahn for the opener, but Jose Paolo Guerrero levelled with a crisp drive just a minute later.
The tempo slackened after the break but the decisive strike fell to the Reds as Michael Ballack maintained a prolific scoring run with a powerful header on the hour.
The result means Bayern have taken maximum points from four games this term and lead the league by two points from the pursuing pack headed by Bremen and Hamburg.
Felix Magath made two changes to the side which beat Berlin 14 days ago, Guerrero replacing injured top scorer Roy Makaay to form an all-Peruvian strike duo, and Bastian Schweinsteiger coming in for a first league outing of term in place of Zé Roberto.
Some 17 places separated the side in the standings before the start of play, but the strugglers made the early running as Ivica Banovic and Andi Wolf both came close.
The champions soon found their range and home shot-stopper Raphael Schäfer pulled off two outstanding reaction saves to deny Pizarro from a header and a deflected Michael Ballack thunderbolt.
The fast and frenetic action continued, Markus Daun heading wide of an open goal after the lively Stefan Kiessling had beaten Kahn to a loose ball outside the box, before Schäfer had to look sharp again with Guerrero lurking.
The opening goal fell to Nuremberg on 20 minutes as Pinola swung over a curling free-kick, bodies tumbled in the box in front of Kahn, and the ball somehow trickled through the giant keeper's legs and over the line.
But the home side's celebrations were cut short just 70 seconds later as Lucio strode forward in thrilling trademark fashion to set up Guerrero for a classy finish from the edge of the box.
The teams took a pause for breath now but Bayern increasingly had the upper hand. Ali Karimi, a shade below the sparkling form of the first three matches, squandered a fine opportunity teed up by Lucio, before Wolf's last-gasp tackle prevented Guerrero rounding off a flowing move instigated by the lively Owen Hargreaves.
Zè Roberto replaced Karimi at half-time and Roque Santa Cruz took over from the subdued Pizarro on the hour, the Paraguay man hardly having time to take up his position in the box before Bayern edged in front.
Willy Sagnol drifted a free-kick into the area for the unmarked Ballack to rise and plant a majestic header past Schäfer and into the far corner, an incredible 21st goal in the last 30 Bundesliga outings for the world-class midfielder.
Faced with a daunting programme of seven matches in the next 21 days, the leaders were now content to protect their lead to the end. The strategy nearly came undone in the last minute as Daun directed a header towards the far corner, but Kahn got down superbly to save the day.
Schäfer made an equally good save from Lucio's free-kick as the seconds ticked down, but the Reds duly held firm to maintain their perfect start to the season.

Nuremberg: Schäfer - Lense, Wolf (Paulus 53), Nikl, Pinola - Polak (Wagefeld 58 ), Cantaluppi - Saenko (Slovak 67), Banovic - Kießling, Daun

Paolo pounces to seal winning start
Sub Paolo Guerrero struck the winner as subdued Bayern held on to claim all three points in this term's Champions League opener.
A boisterous 47,800 sell-out crowd at the Ernst Happel stadium saw the visitors dominate the first half but only seriously threaten once, Claudio Pizarro failing to convert Mehmet Scholl's glorious lobbed pass.
Rapid might have nicked a shock opener on the break as the Reds eased back towards half-time, but Felix Magath's introduction of Paolo Guerrero proved a masterstroke when the Peru youngster scuffed the ball over the line to open the scoring on the hour.
There was still a major scare for the German champions when French referee Sars adjudged Lucio to have fouled sub Muhammet Akagündüz ten minutes from time, but Rapid veteran Jozef Valachovic directed his spot-kick wide of the right-hand upright, and Bayern ran down time to seal the points.
Bayern showed three changes to the side which registered a 13th consecutive Bundesliga victory last weekend. Roy Makaay returned from injury, with Pizarro retaining his place alongside the top scorer at the expense of fellow Peruvian Guerrero.
Boss Felix Magath solved the conundrum posed by Michael Ballack's enforced absence with an attacking midfield formation.
Veteran Scholl nominally filled the Germany skipper's role, although the swap was hardly like-for-like, while Zé Roberto got the nod over Ali Karimi on the left with Bastian Schweinsteiger taking up station on the opposite flank.
After a cagey opening, the German visitors seized the initiative and created the first chances of the game. Schweinsteiger's darting run caused havoc in the Rapid box, before Hargreaves burst forward to tee up Makaay for a curler, although keeper Helge Payer collected comfortably.
Pizarro headed Zé's inviting cross over the bar midway through the half, before Payer made a brave stop to deny the Peru captain as he blasted goalwards from Scholl's inch-perfect through ball.
The deep-lying Viennese were content to soak up Bayern's increasingly half-hearted efforts as the first period wore on and almost punished the German champions on the break with the interval approaching, but former Munich youth Steffen Hofmann just failed to connect, and Marek Kincl diverted Axel Lawaree's cut-back over the crossbar.
The underdogs came even closer five minutes after the restart, Hofmann's free-kick cannoning off the bar and Andreas Dober's follow-up header suffering the same fate.
Magath reacted by introducing Guerrero for the hobbling Pizarro, and sending out fit-again Martin Demichelis for Bixente Lizarazu, Hargreaves moving to left-back to accommodate the Argentine.
Guerrero made an immediate impact with a couple of half-chances before opening the scoring on the hour. Lucio materialised down the inside-right channel and crossed for Makaay to head goalwards. Payer saved well but the rebound fell to Guerrero two metres out, and although the youngster did his best to squander the opportunity, the ball dribbled apologetically over the line.
Payer clawed Makaay's header off the line and beat out Schweinsteiger's drive after an incisive Zé-Hargreaves break as the visitors sought to consolidate, but the home side came within inches of a shock equaliser when Lucio was harshly adjudged to have fouled late sub Akagündüz on 81 minutes.
Rapid stalwart Valachovic assumed responsibility but lazily directed his spot-kick wide of the right-hand upright and the Reds breathed again.
Makaay uncharacteristically squandered a glorious chance to wrap up the points after haring free with Rapid committed to attack, and Scholl too could have doubled the advantage, but at the end of the day, the Reds will simply point to the result as evidence of a job well done.
SK Rapid - Bayern Munich 0-1 (H-T: 0-0)
SK Rapid: Payer - Dober, Valachovic, Bejbl, Adamski - Hofmann, Korsos (Martinez 65), Hlinka, Ivanschitz (Dollinger 84) - Lawaree (Akagündüz 74), Kincl
Bayern Munich: Kahn - Sagnol, Lucio, Ismael, Lizarazu (Demichelis 52) - Schweinsteiger (Deisler 83), Hargreaves, Zé Roberto, Scholl - Makaay, Pizarro (Guerrero 52)
Substitutes: Dreher, Jeremies, Salihamidzic, Karimi
Referee: Mr Sars (France)
Spectators: 47,800 (capacity)
Goals: 0-1 Guerrero (60)
Yellow Cards: Dober, Bejbl / Hargreaves, Sagnol, Guerrero

Austria Wien played a great match, Bayern didn't play that well, and they got lucky with that crappy goal of Guerrero, but it's for the better... |
