Storming Reds close in on last sixteen

Bayern exacted a large measure of revenge for last season's double defeat to Juventus with a convincing victory in Tuesday's first re-match.

The German champions delighted the majority of the 66,000 full house with a storming start and gave their illustrious Italian opponents the runaround in the opening 45 minutes.

The Reds took a thoroughly deserved lead through Sebastian Deisler, before Martin Demichelis crowned an exceptional display by doubling the advantage six minutes from the interval.

The second period was a mainly flat affair after the thrill-a-minute stuff before the break and Zlatan Ibrahimovic's last minute tap-in was nothing more than a consolation for the visitors, although it did serve to ruin Bayern's spotless record at their new home ground.

Reds on course for knockout stage

Munich will be unconcerned at that as the result, the Italians' first defeat this term after nine straight competitive wins, means the 2001 winners move to the top of Group A on maximum points from three games, and are within an ace of sealing a place in the last sixteen of this season's competition.

Bayern welcomed back France full-back pairing Willy Sagnol and Bixente Lizarazu from injury lay-offs, with wide men Zé Roberto and Deisler also passed fit to play after picking up knocks in the weekend draw with Schalke.

Demichelis, harshly sent off at the weekend but eligible to play in Europe, filled the holding role with Michael Ballack instructed to add attacking drive behind a front two of Roy Makaay and Roque Santa Cruz.

Thrilling first half from home heroes

Munich roared off the blocks and created a string of early scoring opportunities against the visibly unnerved Italians.

Santa Cruz headed Lizarazu's cross over the bar, Makaay blasted the Paraguay man's lay-off across the face of Christian Abbiati's goal, and the Gianluigi Buffon stand-in expertly parried Ballack's drilled free-kick, all in the first ten minutes.

Czech superstar Pavel Nedved fired Juve's first chance just wide of Oliver Kahn's right-hand post midway through the half, but it was a brief interruption in the one-way traffic and Demichelis came desperately close to netting when Abbiati spilled Makaay's driven set-piece from the edge of the area.

Lizarazu hobbled off to be replaced by Bastian Schweinsteiger on the half-hour but Bayern maintained their urgency and took a deserved lead after 32 minutes.

Bayern go two up before the break

There was a slight element of luck in the build up as the outstanding Sagnol played an unconventional one-two with referee Vassaras before feeding Deisler.

The Germany man skipped past Gianluca Zambrotta before unleashing an angled drive, keeper Abbiati undoing his previous good work with a schoolboy blunder as the ball deflected off him and over the line.

Kahn held former Leverkusen midfielder Emerson's header as the visitors looked for a rapid response, but instead Deisler was involved again on 39 minutes with a fine flighted corner.

Demichelis profited from Cannavaro's misjudgement to rise unchallenged and plant a firm header into the net for his second Champions League goal of the campaign.

Mauro Camoranesi drove over the bar five minutes from the interval, but Bayern so nearly made it three as Ballack powered a header goalwards after a flowing build-up from Zé Roberto and Santa Cruz, only for Abbiati to save.

Action dies down in second half

Turin boss Fabio Capello reacted at half-time by introducing veteran Alessandro del Piero as a third striker and the visitors enjoyed their best spell, Kahn punching the substitute's free-kick off the line and David Trezeguet blasting into the side-netting.

Bayern had been strangely subdued, a Makaay effort shortly after the restart aside, but the home side resumed control of proceedings as the game entered the last quarter.

Poor Roy Makaay's goalscoring drought stubbornly refused to end as the Dutch ace missed presentable openings on the hour and then twice in the last ten minutes, the better when he drove straight at Abbiati with only the keeper to beat.

An element of niggle crept in as a frustrated Cannavaro clattered Valerien Ismael and Nedved appeared to kick at Sagnol's head with the pair on the ground, before Kahn made a fine save from Emerson.

Ibrahimovic netted the Brazilian's flick-on in the last minute to give the scoreline a false air of respectability, and Kahn had to beat out Nedved's last-gasp free-kick to ensure the visitors did not escape with a draw they would barely have deserved.

Bayern 4 Duisburg 0

Bayern breeze past desolate Duisburg

The champions brushed off any fears of a hangover from their midweek European heroics, mercilessly exploiting a cavernous gulf in class between themselves and sorry MSV Duisburg to win Saturday's one-sided encounter on cruise control and return to the top of the league.

Another 66,000 capacity crowd at the Allianz Arena witnessed a first half of relentless Bayern pressure, rewarded with goals from Michael Ballack and a moment of cunning from Zé Roberto.

In truth, the shell-shocked visitors had keeper Georg Koch and a healthy portion of good fortune to thank for not conceding a hatful, but the veteran shot-stopper was powerless to prevent Roque Santa Cruz increasing the margin on the hour.

Sub Claudio Pizarro opened his account for the season with the last kick of the match as Bayern wrapped up a supremely comfortable victory, which combined with Bremen's goalless draw in Hanover, sees the Reds leapfrog Werder and recover the lead in the Bundesliga standings.

Fortress Allianz Arena

The result also means the champions maintain their flawless domestic record at the Allianz Arena, as they have yet to drop a point or concede a league goal at home this term.

Felix Magath made two changes to the side which started Tuesday evening's feast of football against Juventus.

Bastian Schweinsteiger replaced Bixente Lizarazu during the Champions League encounter and continued in the left-back role, while experienced campaigner Jens Jeremies deputised for suspended Martin Demichelis in a like-for-like swap.

After a cagey opening ten minutes, Bayern took the match by the scruff of the neck and never let go, pummelling the promoted side into submission in a match which resembled men against boys at times.

Shots rain in on Koch

The chances arrived with the regularity of a metronome: Zé flashed a cross-cum-shot across the face, defender Uwe Möhrle deflected Roy Makaay's effort over the bar, and Zé drove wide as he appeared to be fouled in the box by long-serving Carsten Wolters.

Santa Cruz headed Jeremies' curling cross too high, Koch held Ballack's shot, Makaay hit the top of the bar with an angled drive, and the MSV keeper parried Schweinsteiger's drilled effort, all before the mid-point of the half.

The lead was long overdue and finally arrived on 27 minutes, Ballack netting his fourth of the campaign with a powerful header from Santa Cruz' inch-perfect cross.

Lame Zebras pose little threat

The first opening of the match had actually fallen to the Zebras when Peter van Houdt scuffed his shot, and former Red Alex Bugera loosed off MSV's second chance with a burst and shot on 32 minutes.

It was a temporary interruption to the one-way traffic as Zé doubled the lead on 33 minutes, inadvertently declining the easy option of blasting home from close range in favour of a cheeky backheel through a forest of legs from the ensuing scramble.

The Reds took a breather for a spell, and Ballack came off at half-time as a precaution after collecting a mild groin strain, Ali Karimi taking his place.

Reds turn superiority into goals

The Iran star was involved in the build-up for Bayern's third, flipping a loose ball across the box to Zé out on the left. The Brazilian dinked a delightful chip into the middle where the MSV defence parted like the proverbial Red Sea for Santa Cruz to cushion a header over the line.

Mehmet Scholl came on for Zé and Claudio Pizarro replaced Santa Cruz as the double winners eased back in the final quarter of the game.

Unlucky Makaay passed the 800 minute mark without a goal as Koch twice denied the Dutch ace, but the result was never in doubt as the Bavarians more than comfortably wrapped up the points, Pizarro giving the scoreline a realistic look with a near-post flick from Scholl's cross in the last move of a lopsided affair.

Bayern Munich - MSV Duisburg 4-0 (H-T: 2-0)

Bayern Munich: Kahn - Sagnol, Lucio, Ismael, Schweinsteiger - Jeremies - Deisler, Ballack (Karimi 46), Zé Roberto (Scholl 60) - Makaay, Santa Cruz (Pizarro 69)

Substitutes: Dreher, Guerrero, Ottl

MSV Duisburg: Koch - Wolters, Möhrle, Biliskov, Meyer – Baelum, Tjikuzu, Bugera, Grlic (Anfang 77) – Kurth (Rietpietsch 66), van Houdt (Ahanfouf 66)

Referee: Mr Rafati (Hanover)

Spectators: 66,000 (capacity)

Goals: 1-0 Ballack (27), 2-0 Zé Roberto (33), 3-0 Santa Cruz (59), 4-0 Pizarro (90+1)

Yellow Cards: - / Grlic

OK.. so here's the scoop, Ballack's contract is up at the end of the season and no one is sure whether or not he'll stay, so here are FCB's options for midfield shoud he leave:

van der Vaart (Hamburg), Lincoln (Schalke), Mark van Bommel (Barcelona), Marcelinho (Berlin), Riquelme (Villarreal)

... my opinion: Man U and Chelsea can F off.... no one can replace him... maybe Ronaldihno or possibly Marcelihno MAYBE!

any thoughts????

please?

Relieved Bayern Happy With Pokal Win
Players and officials of DFB Pokal holders Bayern Munich expressed relief today after last night’s narrow win at second division Erzgebirge Aue.

A late Michael Ballack goal took the Bavarians through to the last sixteen in front of a raucous crowd 16,500. After the game, Bayern coach Felix Magath paid tribute to Aue. "We made heavy weather of it," he said. "It was a typical cup tie. Aue put up a fantastic fight, which is why it took us so long to score. That’s what’s so wonderful about football - you can make up for lack of class with desire and fighting spirit. We’ve seen that out there again tonight."

General manager Uli Hoeneß added: "It happened just as we suspected it might. Aue gave it 110%. They were unbelievably determined, they threw themselves into the tackles. Our players thought they could do it at half pace, and of course that’s not enough in a Cup match like this one."

Scorer Michael Ballack was critical of his team. "It wouldn’t have been as close if we’d taken our chances early on. We ended up having to go the distance for the victory. Aue kept the game alive for a long time. That was a typical Cup battle," he said.

Defender Valerien Ismaël was pragmatic, telling the club’s official Web site: "We took the game extremely seriously, but it was still tough. Aue played extremely well and tried everything. We defended well and then took our chance when it came at the end. We’re in the next round, and that’s all that matters in the Cup."

Aue coach Gerd Schädlich was proud of his team’s efforts: "We were pretty good for long periods. I’m happy we’ve got the Bayern game out of the way, it was the only thing on everyone’s minds here for the last few weeks. Now we have to improve in the league. What mattered to me was watching a great game of football, a classic Cup battle, which basically passed off with nothing untoward happening."
