Ballack Is German Footballer of the Year

Quote:
Michael Ballack has been named German Footballer of the Year for the third time after the prestigious annual poll of journalists saw him run away with the title.

Ballack, the German national team captain, won 516 votes and was over 400 clear of Köln's young striker Lukas Podolski who finished second. The top five was completed by Hertha BSC's Brazilian midfielder Marcelinho, Nürnberg's Bundesliga top-scorer Marek Mintal, and Bayern Munich's emerging star Bastian Schweinsteiger.

The result was something of a surprise given the effervescent form of Marcelinho in 2005. While Ballack has been in undeniably good form, he had been helped in the voting by his membership of the all-conquering Bayern Munich side in domestic football this year. His victory is his third in the last four years, with former Werder Bremen striker Ailton splitting the triumphs last year.

The prestigious award has been made every year since 1960 and the list of former winners reads as a roll call of the legends of the German game. Uwe Seeler won in the inaugural year, and winners since have included Franz Beckenbauer, Gerd Müller, Berti Vogts, Günter Netzer, Sepp Maier, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, Paul Breitner, Karl-Heinz Förster, Harald Schumacher, Rudi Völler, Jürgen Klinsmann, Lothar Matthäus, Matthias Sammer, and Oliver Kahn.

Bayern crush FC Tokyo 4-0 in pre-season friendly

Quote:
TOKYO, July 28 (Reuters) - German champions Bayern Munich thrashed FC Tokyo 4-0 on Thursday in the first of two pre-season games in Japan.

Striker Roy Makaay put Bayern ahead with a crisp finish in the 19th minute before Brazilian defender Lucio headed a second on the half hour mark in Tokyo.

Goals after the break from substitutes Paolo Guerro and Hasan Salihamidzic completed the rout.

Goalkeeper Oliver Kahn did not play because of back problems but Bayern were never seriously troubled.

Germany captain Michael Ballack, whose future at Bayern has been the subject of speculation, was a constant threat and came close to scoring on several occasions.

"I was very pleased with our performance," Bayern coach Felix Magath told reporters. "FC Tokyo were quick but I don't think we felt like we were ever really tested properly."

Bayern take on Jubilo Iwata on Saturday in their second pre-season game in Japan.
