Europe move looms as Schalke join Villa in race to sign Baros
The Bundesliga side Schalke are the latest club to register an interest in Milan Baros as Liverpool await an increased offer from Aston Villa for their unwanted Czech Republic striker.
The 23-year-old was back on the sidelines on Tuesday as Rafael Benitez's team maintained their Champions' League defence against FBK Kaunas in Lithuania, having come to accept that his career at Anfield is drawing to a close.
Liverpool, who added Peter Crouch to their forward line last week, have given permission to the striker's agent to explore interest around Europe, with Deportivo La Coruña providing hope of a move to Spain after an abortive attempt by Valencia earlier this summer.
Baros refuses to be rushed by Liverpool into a decision about his future. But his agent, Pavel Paska, said: "I have had a meeting with Schalke manager Rudi Assauer. The name Baros has been noted. Schalke are one of the interested clubs."
Aston Villa remain in the running for the leading goalscorer at Euro 2004 but have been told they must improve their £5m offer by £2m before Liverpool will sanction a deal.
Liverpool's Spanish midfielder, Antonio Nuñez, has confirmed that he will sign a three-year deal with the newly promoted Primera Liga side Celta Vigo.
Nuñez, 26, joined Liverpool from Real Madrid in August last year as a make-weight in the £8m deal that took the England striker Michael Owen in the opposite direction.
He injured knee ligaments during his first training session at the club and, despite scoring in the Carling Cup Final defeat by Chelsea, he struggled to make any impact at Anfield.

'Pool advance to 3rd Round of CL qualifying; Celtic out
| Quote: | LONDON (AP) -- Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard scored his seventh goal in Champions League qualifying to help defending champion Liverpool advance Tuesday to the third round of European soccer's premier club competition.
The Reds won 2-0 over FBK Kaunas and advanced on a 5-1 aggregate.
Former champion Celtic was eliminated, however, losing 5-4 on aggregate to Artmedia Bratislava despite a 4-0 win.
Gerrard scored in the 77th minute, two minutes after entering the match. It was his seventh goal in four qualifying matches. Djibril Cisse added Liverpool's second in the 85th at Anfield.
The remaining second round qualifying matches were scheduled for Wednesday.
Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez rested eight of the starting 11 from last week, when the Reds beat the Lithuanian team 3-1.
Gerrard scored from 25 yards after a corner, and Cisse volleyed home a chip from Luis Garcia.
``We had more space in the second half and more pace -- and at the end 2-0 is a good result,'' Benitez said.
Liverpool, a five-time European champion, beat AC Milan on penalties in the final last season, but needed special dispensation from UEFA to participate in this season's competition. The English club finished in fifth place in the Premier League -- one spot below the last Champions League place granted to England.
But after appealing to Europe's governing body, the team was allowed to compete in the first round. Liverpool then beat Total Network Solutions, the Welsh champions, 6-0 on aggregate.
The English team will play either KF Tirana of Albania or CSKA Sofia of Bulgaria in the next round.
In Glasgow, Scotland, Gordon Strachan got his first win as Celtic manager, but it wasn't enough to reach the third qualifying round.
Alan Thompson, John Hartson, Stephen McManus and Craig Beattie scored for the 1967 champions at Celtic Park. It still wasn't enough to overturn a 5-0 loss last week in Slovakia.
Artmedia will next play either Partizan Belgrade of Serbia-Montenegro or Moldova's Sheriff. |

Crouch out with hamstring injury
| Quote: | Liverpool's Peter Crouch has been ruled out for two to three weeks of the season after pulling his right hamstring on Tuesday.
He underwent a scan at the Melwood training ground after picking up the injury in the win over FBK Kaunas.
The £7m striker was already out of the first two Premiership games as a result of a suspension picked up playing for Southampton last season.
He now misses next week's Champions League third qualifying round tie too.
