Brazilian Lincoln offers to play for Germany

Quote:

Schalke 04's Brazilian playmaker Lincoln has offered to play for Germany after giving up hope of representing the country of his birth.

"In the past it would have been unthinkable but now, if (Germany coach Juergen) Klinsmann were to call me, it would immediately be an issue," the 26-year-old told Sunday's Bild newspaper.

"The German national team is now a real subject for me. I've explained to my family that this is where I make my living now. I've been here almost five years and I know what makes the Germans tick. I understand the mentality."

Lincoln added: "It's hard to accept (that I won't play for Brazil) but I have to live with it."

A free-kick specialist, Lincoln has played in the Bundesliga since his move to Kaiserslautern in 2001.

He signed for Schalke in 2004 and had an outstanding first season, scoring 12 league goals in helping the club to second place in the Bundesliga and the final of the German Cup, with Bayern Munich pipping them to the post each time.

Germany host the World Cup in 2006, starting on June 9.

Any application for a change in nationality would have to be dealt with speedily for Lincoln to have a chance of playing in the tournament.

That's great news man! He is a very good player, offensive midfielder that can take very good free-kicks. It would be a great thing to see him in the Germany shirt.

Yeah i kinda hope Klinsi and the DFB allow for it to happen. We need a backup for ballack and a support crew for lahm and Schweinsteiger. I love his goal scoring ability.

Schalke wrap up Rafinha deal

General manager Rudi Assauer had doubted the move would ever go through, but now it is official. Marcio Rafael de Souza, who goes by the name of Rafinha, has joined the Royal Blues from Coritiba FC. The 19-year-old Brazilian has signed a deal that will tie him to the club until 2009.

"We have clinched a deal we no longer thought possible", said Assauer. "It just goes to prove the value of pushing as hard as you can." Rafinha confirmed that other top European clubs had been interested in signing him, but said he had been quick to point out that he would only move to Europe to join Schalke 04.

The defender caught the eye of club officials during the U-20 World Championship in Holland, where Rafinha helped Brazil knock out Germany, amongst others, scoring an extra-time winner during a 2-1 quarter-final win. The Brazilians eventually lost in the semi-final to tournament winners Argentina. "Rafinha made a very good impression during the tournament", emphasised Assauer, who along with team manager Andreas Müller is hoping the Brazilian will prove a valuable addition to the squad.

Müller firmly believes Rafinha has the potential to establish himself quickly in the Bundesliga. "It's a question of character, and he has a great personality. I'm sure he'll adjust to the Bundesliga very quickly in spite of his young age."

If the German Football League (DFL) clear Rafinha to play and he does well in training, he will probably feature in the squad for Saturday's Bundesliga clash against Borussia Mönchengladbach. Assauer does not expect him to have any fitness problems. "He played in the Brazilian league only ten days ago so he's fully fit."

Rafinha was born in Londrina and joined Coritiba FC at the age of fifteen, for whom he was in his second year. "This season he has started thirteen matches and scored three goals", reported Müller. He has also played fourteen times for the Brazil under-20 side and found the net on two occasions.

"Like most Brazilian defenders he is strong going forward", Müller added. "He's able to switch quickly from defence to attack, exert pressure down the flank and put in good crosses. He's also dangerous in front of goal."

The fact that Rafinha is just 1.72 m tall and weighs 68 kilograms does not worry the Schalke team manager. "Roberto Carlos is no giant either. But we shouldn't make the mistake of comparing him with such a world star. We intend to bring him on slowly. He's only nineteen so he'll be allowed to have a bad game as well."

Experienced players such as Marcelo Bordon and Mladen Krstajic will be there to help him out on the field of play. Off the pitch he'll have the support of his family, as his mother and six brothers and sisters will be joining him in Germany. He will also be given language tuition to help him communicate as quickly as possible. "I'm looking forward to playing for Schalke and I promise to work hard to improve myself."

Well looks like we got ourselved the RB we needed, I heard that he looks promising, anybody seen him playing in Brazil?

Germany turn down offer from Brazilian Lincoln

Quote:
Germany coach Juergen Klinsmann has rejected the offer of Brazilian midfielder Lincoln to play for the 2006 World Cup hosts, team manager Oliver Bierhoff said on Tuesday.

"The coach and I have talked over the offer from Lincoln," Bierhoff said. "We're pleased that such an exceptional player is interested in playing for Germany.

"Although he would certainly reinforce the team in sporting terms, after careful consideration we decided to reject the offer. Players should have a closer relation to Germany than is the case with Lincoln."

Lincoln, the Schalke 04 playmaker who has been in the Bundesliga since 2001, made the offer to play for Germany at the weekend, saying he had given up hope of representing Brazil.

... kinda glad they turned him down.... he's only been in the 1.BL for 5 years, hardly deserving to play for germany; plus its only his 2nd choice... o well
