Rio writes, "Sir Alex Ferguson has a genuine love for football, that’s what stands out when he talks to you, or when you see him in training. His love of football is the main reason why he’s been at Manchester United so long, along with the fact that he has such a strong hunger for success. When you have had the kind of achievements he has, it’s difficult to walk away from the game.

"If he did want to leave, I think he’d want to do it by going out on a winning note, maybe lifting the Premiership or the Champions League again. You can understand that. He has been successful throughout his entire career and he doesn’t want that to change.

"All the players would like to win the top trophies as soon as possible and I think we are capable of winning major silverware under Sir Alex. But he’s instilled an attitude here of expecting to compete for - and win - major honours, and that won’t change after he’s gone.

"His legacy will always live on at the club. It’s very difficult to imagine the place without him. It would be eerie without him around Old Trafford and especially the training ground. None of the players ever think about that. He has always had such a powerful and influential presence at the club for 20 years that, to think about Manchester United without him in charge would feel wrong.

"One of the reasons he gets so much out of his teams is that he has always stuck by his players, and that’s something that gains him great respect from the squad. Behind closed doors, the press don’t know what he is like or how he deals with players’ personal situations at the club, but in public, he defends his players to the hilt and that’s very important for us. There is a two-way trust between him and the player, he puts trust in you and you want to pay that back.

"The manager has had such an influence on the club over the past 20 years that those principles are the foundations this club is built on. He carried on the best traditions of Manchester United, but he also stamped his own personality around the place, making it the hugely successful club it is today." - Rio Ferdinand

Arsene Wenger has paid tribute to Sir Alex Ferguson's 'unique achievement' as the Scot celebrates 20 years at Manchester United.

KEANE LEADS FERGUSON TRIBUTES

Ferguson has had two decades of unprecedented success at Old Trafford, including the treble of European Cup, Premier League and FA Cup in the summer of 1999.

For most of the last decade, Wenger was his fiercest rival, before the Roman Abramovich era at Chelsea changed the power balance of the English game.

"I have seen half of those years from very close up," said Wenger.

"What his legacy will be, I do not know, but it is a tremendous achievement.

"When you think that the average life of a manager is one year and seven days, and somebody has done 20, it is remarkable consistency.

"It is a remarkable achievement, unique. A unique one in Europe at the top level.

"No-one could say the opposite. It needs tremendous motivation, tremendous stamina, and he has that."

PEARCE HAILS 'SHINING LIGHT' FERGUSON

Wenger added: "With the two of us it was more about competitiveness than composure.

"I feel we had some heated times - but time will settle things and there is a respect there now."

Wenger believes Ferguson could stick around for a few years yet.

The Arsenal boss quipped: "He wanted to retire at 60, 65, 70, 75 and then 80.

"Nobody knows what will happen to us and how we will feel. Who knows if you have the health to do it? You need remarkable health to do it."

O'SHEA: FERGUSON IS A ONE-OFF

Wenger celebrated his 10th anniversary at Arsenal at the end of September.

He said: "How long that will last? I do not know. 10 years is a long time - I will be 67.

"I have no long-term plan. I just want to do well in the short term. I have long-term plans for the club, but not for me.

"For me the target is the next game."

Sir Bobby writes, "The last 20 years have been really easy to live with at Old Trafford. It's been magic, and you have to put it down to Alex Ferguson.

"The expectations of Manchester United, with all the history, are huge. People expect United to be up there and competing at the highest level. But I don’t think anybody’s had a manager that’s been there for 20 years and had the record that he’s had in one position. It’s fantastic, really. Bill Shankly, Brian Clough… there are certain managers that can stay the distance and go longer than the norm, and Alex is one of them. He’s just terrific.

"If there was an exciting player that Matt Busby felt the fans would enjoy watching, Matt Busby would go and sign him and Alex Ferguson’s done the same, the youth policy’s been always part of the tradition here - it’s been marvellous.
"Alex has continued producing youth players to (a) do well in their own youth competitions and (b) also to come forward into the first team. Like Matt Busby, he’s never been afraid to give young players a chance.

"He’s arguably the greatest manager ever, although I think the fact that Bob Paisley and Liverpool have won the European Cup more times probably grates on Alex a little bit. For the number of times we’ve been champions we’ve not taken it that stage further. I think he’d like to win at least one more European Cup before he packs his bags.

"When it comes down to it, he’s a worker. His background of coming up in Govan in the shipbuilding areas of Glasgow… he brought the same mentality and attitude onto the football pitch. He’s completely professional in every way and I’m glad he’s been here for the last 20 years."
