Jordaan is unhappy with recent Australian comments
Organisers of the 2010 World Cup have complained to Australian officials over suggestions that South Africa's preparations are in trouble and that Australia could step in instead.
Danny Jordaan, head of the Local Organising Committee, said a letter has been sent to the Australian foreign ministry over recent remarks that the finals are in doubt.
"We find it totally unfair, especially if it is coming from a government official," said Jordaan.
"They have done it more than once."
Australia has already stated its intent to host the 2018 tournament but officials have also said they would be ready in four years' time.
There are all sorts of question marks about infrastructure or requirements in South Africa. Australia doesn't have those problems
Football Federation Australia chief John O'Neill
In September, Football Federation Australia chief John O'Neill said "we've got to be ready to be absolutely opportunistic."
"There are all sorts of question marks about infrastructure or requirements in South Africa. Australia doesn't have those problems," he said.
The premier of New South Wales, Morris Iemma, also infuriated South African officials after stating that Australia has "the capacity to step into the breach at a moment's notice."
"If it can't come off with South Africa, and there are doubts that it can, then we are by far the best alternative," Australia's Daily Telegraph quoted Iemma as saying.
A spokesman for the South African foreign ministry has said such comments are 'totally unacceptable'.
"We have been concerned about the negative comments and articles about the country's capability to host the event," said Ronnie Mamoepa.
"There is no question about it. The event will be held in South Africa."
South Africa's preparations were given a vote of confidence on Wednesday by a visiting Fifa delegation, with one senior official saying they were further down the road than previous hosts Germany at a similar stage.
"Fifa is very happy and satisfied with the progress made," said Horst Schmidt, who is to take up a new post as Fifa's coordinator in South Africa. |

A delegation of Fifa officials on Wednesday expressed satisfaction with South Africa's preparations for the 2010 World Cup.
Horst Schmidt, who is to take up a new post as Fifa's coordinator for the tournament, said South Africa had made more rapid progress than their German predecessors.
"Fifa is very happy and satisfied with the progress made," Schmidt said in Johannesburg.
"Not only is the country on time, but a bit ahead of Germany at the same time.
"We are happy with preparations and now it's for the Local Organising Committee to maintain the momentum," added the German who was one of the driving forces behind this year's tournament in his homeland.
Schmidt was part of a delegation, which also included Fifa general secretary Urs Linsi and marketing director Jerome Valcke, who have been briefed since the start of the week on preparations for the first ever World Cup in Africa.
606 DEBATE: Will South Africa host a successful tournament?
Schmidt said the main focus was on the progress being made on building and upgrading the 10 stadia which are to host the tournament.
"After evaluating the plans for the construction of the stadiums, we were satisfied that there is enough time to construct, equip, and test the stadiums before the day of the kick-off. The task ahead becomes very clear," he said.
The delegation's verdict after the visit serves as a significant boost to the local organisers after concerns expressed by Fifa president Sepp Blatter who said in September that he needed "to fire up the organising committee."
Irvin Khoza, chairman of the local organising committee said he was happy with "Fifa's vote of confidence."
"The schedule will be met as proposed and come the first quarter of next year, construction must start," Khoza said..
President Thabo Mbeki pledged last month that South Africa would confound international sceptics by meeting its deadlines and staging a well-oiled World Cup.

2006-11-24 16:45:30
Comments were made by the (Australian state) New South Wales premier Morris Lemma earlier this week that his state is 'salivating at the prospect' of hosting the 2010 World Cup.
These comments are said to have angered the 2010 World Cup Local Organising Committee CEO Danny Jordaan. Reports are that the LOC has sent a letter to the Australian foreign ministry complaining about the comments made by the Australian head of state.
Jordaan complained that he wishes that Australia refrain from commenting and raising doubts over South Africa’s inability to host this prestigious event. "Australia must get off our backs. They have no chance but they keep on and on," he told News24.
The LOC's response is justified as a delegation of FIFA officials which included World Cup Germany's Horst Schmidt, gave a vote of confidence at South Africa's progress.
The delegation was in the country to evaluate the plans for constructing stadia that would host the big event.

And we have the expierence of hosting major events
| Quote: | South Africa regularly hosts major international sporting events, and since 1994 has successfully managed some of the biggest - including the 1995 Rugby World Cup, the 2003 Cricket World Cup, the Women's World Cup of Golf in 2005 and 2006 and, in January 2006, the only street race in the inaugural A1 GP World Cup of Motorsport. |

| Quote: | JOHANNESBURG, Dec 13 (Reuters) - South Africa on Wednesday dismissed concerns it had fallen behind in 2010 World Cup preparations, saying it had made headway in modernising stadiums and making the streets safe for visitors.
'The preparation work has begun,' Deputy Minister of Finance Jabu Moleketi said at a news conference in the capital Pretoria. 'Our eyes are on the ball and we are going to deliver ... we are confident we are on time.'
Moleketi said the companies that would carry out the majority of the World Cup-related work would be announced before the end of the year and that major construction work on stadiums would begin throughout the country next February.
He added that 8.4 billion rand ($1.20 billion) has been earmarked for construction and renovation of stadiums and nearly 6.0 billion rand on additional infrastructure projects for the tournament.
Moleketi's rosy forecast came as South Africa continues to reassure world soccer's governing body FIFA that it is on schedule to harness the resources and spirit needed to host the first World Cup held in Africa.
South African police added on Wednesday they planned to have 192,000 officers on the nation's streets by 2009 and that 30,000 of those would be assigned exclusively to protect athletes, soccer fans and other tourists during the World Cup.
'The name of the game is blanket security,' Andre Pruis, deputy national commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS), said at the news conference in Pretoria.
Jitters in the world soccer community about South Africa's successful 2010 bid have been fueled by the country's creaky infrastructure, including its decrepit transportation system, as well as a high level of violent crime.
Concerns intensified last month when local organizers of the tournament failed to show up at a news conference to discuss their readiness, stoking another round of rumours that FIFA might consider moving the tournament to Australia.
Top FIFA officials have repeatedly denied that any plan exists to shift the tournament away from South Africa, which has one of the world's highest rates of murder and rape.
The challenge facing the country's police forces was highlighted earlier this month by the rape of a French woman on the beachfront in Durban, a popular resort city and one of the host venues for the finals.
The incident received local and international coverage, prompting renewed doubts about South Africa's ability to ensure the safety of the tens of thousands of World Cup visitors.
Last month the new U.S. ambassador to South Africa, Eric Bost said few would want to come to the country for the finals if crime continued at current levels.
