The Old Firm
The name Old Firm is a collective term for the Glaswegian football clubs, Rangers and Celtic. Its modern usage is generally as a neutral shorthand for the two clubs, for example when describing their derby matches. Its origin, however, is as a pejorative term to imply that the two clubs are running the scene, together, against the wishes of the other clubs in Scotland. The term is derived from the lucrative nature of contests between the two, and the suspicion that the clubs have colluded to ensure their profitability, at the expense of other teams.
The two clubs are easily the most successful in Scotland, having won between them 63 Scottish Cups and 90 League championships (as of 2005). Interruptions to their ascendancy have occurred infrequently, most recently with the challenge of the New Firm of Aberdeen and Dundee United in the first half of the 1980s. As at 2005, the last season during which either Old Firm club finished outside the top two in the Scottish Premier League was in 1994-95. Some have argued that the combination of the clubs' large supports - which far outweigh those of other Scottish clubs - and the revenue they derive from regular European football means that the Scottish Premier League has become more unbalanced, and less competitive, than ever before.
The result of the combination of the two clubs' dominance of Scottish football, and their significance in social, cultural and political terms, is that both Celtic and Rangers are prominent institutions in Scottish life to a degree beyond what would be expected for large football clubs elsewhere in Britain.
The competition between the two clubs has its roots in more than just a simple athletic rivalry. It is infused with a series of complex disputes centred on religion (Catholic and Protestant) and Irish politics. The result has been an enduring enmity between fans that has extended beyond the kind of intra-city footballing rivalry that might be expected in situations where two clubs dominate a country's footballing scene. This has been manifested in a history laden with violent incidents, sometimes leading to deaths.
The two clubs normally compete four times a year in the Scottish Premier League (SPL) and are frequently drawn against each other in various Cup competitions.
Celtic Park
Celtic Park stadium is the home of Celtic F.C. football team in Glasgow, Scotland. The all-seater stadium (also known as 'Parkhead', and nicknamed 'Paradise' by Celtic fans) has a capacity of 60,506. It is the largest football stadium in Scotland and is currently the second-largest club ground in the UK (after Old Trafford).
Celtic moved from the original Celtic Park to the present ground in 1892. The stadium has undergone numerous redevelopments, most recently in the mid 1990s. Now Celtic Park completely encircles the pitch and consists of a double tiered stand which extends around three-quarters of the pitch and a single tier main stand, which contains the Celtic museum.
In 1938, Celtic Park saw its largest attendance of 92,000 when Celtic played Rangers. Tours of the stadium are available.

Well, this isn't exactly how i wanted t start the Celtic thread, but o well...
Rangers romp to 3-1 win over 10-man Celtic
| Quote: | Rangers beat 10-man Celtic 3-1 in the first Old Firm showdown of the season to move joint top of the Scottish Premier League on Saturday.
The visiting side suffered an awful first half with Alan Thompson sent off for a lunge from behind on Nacho Novo in the 23rd minute.
Celtic captain Neil Lennon was also red-carded at the final whistle for abusing the referee and had to be hauled clear by team mate Paul Telford.
Rangers manager Alex McLeish said Thompson's early dismissal helped sway the game his side's way.
"We had the extra man for a long period of the game and it certainly gave us a good advantage," McLeish told reporters.
Dado Prso volleyed the opening goal when Marvin Andrews charged from the halfway line on 34 minutes before delivering a fine ball into the box for the Croatian striker to smash home.
"It was a terrific chipped pass from Marvin Andrews for the first goal by Dado Prso and it is a measure of his ability," said McLeish. "He has improved in the last couple of years in terms of his use of the ball."
Early in the second half Thomas Buffel scored the decisive second before 49,699 fans at Ibrox.
"Thomas Buffel certainly pepped up his game and he was a key man for us," McLeish added.
Celtic hauled back a late penalty goal when Ian Murray brought down Shaun Maloney who took the spot kick himself in the 85th minute to beat Dutch keeper Ronald Waterreus.
Rangers were awarded a penalty two minutes later when Stilian Petrov brought down Prso. Spaniard Novo squeezed his effort under Polish keeper Artur Boruc for the third to clinch equal top spot with Hearts on nine points from four games.
However, Hearts were playing later on Saturday at home to Aberdeen with the chance to move clear again. |

Celtic debts rise to almost 20 million pounds
| Quote: | Celtic's debts have spiralled to almost 20 million pounds ($36.09 million) following their poor European campaign last season.
The club announced the figures at a news conference on Friday, 24 hours before the first Old Firm clash of the new season with Rangers at Ibrox.
Celtic lost out to Rangers on the final day of last season in the race for the Scottish championship.
They also finished bottom of their Champions League group and missed out on 'parachute' payments from the UEFA Cup, although they did win the Scottish Cup in former manager Martin O'Neill's final game in charge.
"On the face of it, last year marked a pause in a remarkable run of success enjoyed by Celtic in recent years," chairman Brian Quinn told reporters.
"Turnover was down for the first time in 10 years, with sales of merchandising in particular falling sharply following several years of uninterrupted growth."
Celtic said debts rose by 3.7 million pounds to 19.5 million pounds after turnover fell by 9.9 percent.
They have already crashed out of Europe this season under new manager Gordon Strachan after suffering a surprise defeat by Slovakians Artmedia Petrzalka in the second qualifying round of the Champions League.

Celtic 4-0 Dunfermline Athletic

| Quote: | Zurawski strikes twice as Celtic thump Dunfermline 4-0
Celtic coasted to a 4-0 win at Dunfermline on Sunday to give their fans even more to cheer about following rivals Rangers' shock 3-0 home defeat by Hibernian 24 hours earlier.
Polish international striker Maciej Zurawski got his first goals for the club, opening the scoring after five minutes with a low shot and completing it 16 minutes from time.
Welsh striker John Hartson side-footed an easy second five minutes later following a mix-up in the Dunfermline defence. Goalkeeper Bryn Halliwell mis-hit a clearance from a pass back against his own defender Scott Wilson and Hartson knocked the ball into the empty net.
Dunfermline's first-half misery was complete when ex-Celt Mark Burchill had a 26th-minute penalty well saved by Polish keeper Artur Boruc after Adam Virgo's foul on the striker.
Japanese midfielder Shunsuke Nakamura made it 3-0 in the 57th by clipping a first-time shot across the keeper from Zurawski's low cross for his first goal since signing before Zurawski slotted the fourth.
Hearts, who beat Motherwell 2-1, top the standings on 15 points with Celtic, Kilmarnock and Hibs all on 10. Champions Rangers have nine points.

| Quote: | Bhoys win it for Jock
Celtic commemorated the 20th anniversary of Jock Stein's death in fine style with a 2-0 win over Aberdeen at Parkhead.
The Parkhead legend was given a moving one-minute's applause in his memory before kick-off and he would have savoured the match-winning contribution of their latest hero.
Maciej Zurawski took his scoring tally to three in two games, after a slow start to his Hoops career, with a breathtaking strike after combining brilliantly with John Hartson.
He then supplied the pass for Stilian Petrov's goal which gave Gordon Strachan victory against his former club and moved Celtic to within two points of leaders Hearts.
The little Scot restored captain Neil Lennon and Alan Thompson to his midfield while Aberdeen manager Jimmy Calderwood made just one change from the 11 which swept aside Livingston with new signing Stevie Crawford making his debut for Scott Muirhead.
The last time Calderwood brought his team to Celtic Park they return to the north with the three points and they have already condemned Rangers to defeat this season.
But the side looked buoyed by their win at East End Park and Hartson was within inches of getting a telling head to Thompson's trademark free-kick in the sixth minute.
Zurawski also proved he was on fire after following up his double against Dunfermline with a brilliant 13th-minute strike to fire Celtic into the lead.
Hartson and the Polish international exchanged passes to leave the Aberdeen defence watching shadows as the summer signing ran through to collect the pass before blasted an unstoppable right-foot shot into the roof of the net with Ryan Esson cruelly exposed.
The Celtic back four were also dodgy at times and they were fortunate in the 18th minute when Kevin McNaughton picked out Steve Lovell, that the Dundee man headed well wide.
The game was strangely flat for long periods but Petrov could have breathed life back into it in the 51st minute.
Hartson knocked Thompson's poor cross into his path but the midfielder failed to get the power he would have hoped for and his right-foot effort was comfortably saved by Esson.
Thompson was fortunate not to be booked in the 55th minute when he sent Zander Diamond sprawling to the ground with a late challenge before Calderwood brought on Andrew Considine for the injured McNaughton.
Aberdeen finally brought out a save Artur Boruc moments later but he dived to his right to save Byrne's effort before Thompson had a glorious chance to kill the game off.
Nakamura turned Byrne inside out and curled an inch-perfect cross to the unmarked Englishman, who somehow headed over the top from seven yards with just Esson to beat.
But Petrov showed Thompson all about finishing just after the hour mark following more great play from the rejuvenated Zurawski.
The opportunity looked long gone as Zurawski was held up near the goalline but he turned and threaded the ball through to his team-mate inside the box.
Petrov still had plenty to do but he remained composed and feigned to shoot before firing low through a ruck of players and past the rooted Esson.
Calderwood responded by swapping Byrne with Muirhead before Clark whistled a long-range effort high and wide.
Both managers made changes in the 70th minute with Strachan bringing on Shaun Maloney and Craig Beattie for Hartson and Nakamura, after his gruelling midweek trip to Tokyo, while Calderwood brought on John Stewart for Lovell to lift his beaten side.
Scotland man Beattie thought he had won a penalty four minutes later when he was pulled down in the area by former Celtic winger Jamie Smith but the referee ignored the pleas.
But the Celtic players - and in particularly Zurawski - had already done their job.

Celtic crush Well as Rangers stumble
Stilian Petrov grabbed a hat-trick as Celtic crushed Motherwell 5-0 in Glasgow to keep the pressure on Scottish Premier League leaders Hearts.
A Shaun Maloney goal and a sensational Shunsuke Nakamura free-kick added to the Bulgarian captain's treble to give Gordon Strachan's side all three points on Wednesday night.
Hearts, meanwhile, stayed three points ahead of Celtic with a 1-0 win at home to Kilmarnock, but the big talking point from the SPL's mid-week fixtures was Rangers being held 2-2 away to bottom of the table Livingston.
Celtic had taken the lead in the 14th minute through Petrov. Maloney collected the ball wide on the left and threaded a fantastic pass through the centre of the Motherwell defence, where the Bulgarian had made a great run, and he coolly slotted past goalkeeper Graeme Smith.
Three minutes later the hosts doubled their lead after a scintillating passing move between Japanese playmaker Nakamura and Petrov released Craig Beattie on the right. He sent in a cross to the back post for Maloney and he had time to take a touch before driving low past Smith.
In the 23rd minute the match was finished as a contest when Petrov scored his second of the game. Maloney's pass to the edge of the box was cushioned by Beattie for the Bulgarian midfielder to fire home from 20-yards, via Smith's right-hand post.
Motherwell were handed a golden opportunity to pull a goal back just before the break when Bobo Balde was short with a pass back but Celtic's Polish keeper Artur Boruc did well to grab the ball from the feet of Richie Foran.
With the win more or less secured by half-time the second-half began at the pace of a training match with few openings created by either side.
Chris Sutton came close to making it 4-0 in the 62nd minute when he sent a looping header was inches wide.
But Celtic did manage to stretch their lead in the 67th minute after a 'Well handball 30-yards from goal was penalised by referee Charlie Richmond. Nakamura took a short run and fired an unstoppable left-foot shot into the top right-hand corner, giving Smith no chance.
Petrov then grabbed his hat-trick in the 79th minute. Nakamura played a low pass in to Sutton, who was 10-yards from goal, and he played the ball back for the Bulgarian who clinically chipped the ball past Smith to make it 5-0.
Rangers, meanwhile, saw the brakes put on their pursuit of Hearts and Celtic.
Alex McLeish's side looked to be coasting after a first-half strike from captain Barry Ferguson and a Chris Burke strike after the break put them two ahead.
However, a Robert Snodgrass double handed Paul Lambert's side an unlikely point.
Managerless Hearts won 1-0 at home to Kilmarnock with Lithuanian Edgar Jankauskas's goal in the 34th minute enough to secure all three points.
Hibernian were 2-1 winners away to Dunfermline with a second-half brace from Garry O'Connor giving Tony Mowbray's side the win, despite Gary Mason scoring a late consolation for the Pars.
Falkirk won 3-0 away to Inverness Caledonian Thistle with a goal from Stevie Thompson in the first-half and one each for Darryl Duffy and Portuguese player Pedro Moutinho in the second half.
On Tuesday Aberdeen won 2-0 at home to Dundee United with first-half goals from Jamie Smith and Stevie Crawford.
